Dr Michael Fernando

MBBS (Hons), FRACP, AMusA

Michael is a Medical Oncologist with extensive experience and special interests in breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and head and neck cancer.

After graduating from Monash University in 2015, he completed his physicians’ training at Bendigo and Geelong Hospitals. As an oncology trainee, he has worked at Eastern Health, Northern Hospital in Epping, and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre. He earned his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2022.

After gaining his letters, Michael completed a research fellowship in early-phase trials and head and neck cancer. He currently works at Waverley Private Hospital and the Northern Hospital, where he coordinates the Symptom and Urgent Response (SURC) service. 

Michael is a firm believer in clear communication and excels at explaining complex oncological concepts. He prides himself on his compassion and holistic approach to oncology and is always willing to go the extra mile for those under his care. He is also passionate about education, co-hosting the popular podcast Oncology for the Inquisitive Mind, which covers the latest research in his ever-changing field. 

In his free time, Michael loves hiking, honing his skills as a novelist, and enjoying the company of his wife, Monika, and his Labrador, Beans.
